pick me up: eating with your hands

It’s all happened to us, when we drop our fork and knife after a few clumsy attempts at stripping a chicken drumstick of its meat. Or when the unwieldy...

A few of our dishes at Marley Spoon celebrate the pleasure of eating with your hands. The sturdy tofu and vegetable banh mi that requires a firm grip. The tofu and mushroom lettuce cups that call for a light touch, lest the leafy greens tear along the way. The flatbread pizzas cut into bite-sized pieces for easy picking. A focaccia sandwich so soft and airy it needs just a little pressure from your fingers to hold the prosciutto and cheese in place.

And then there’s the delight of texture. Feeling the warm tortilla just out of the oven, the rough crust of a sandwich, the flaky surface of naan, the delicate lettuce leaves heating up from steamed rice, the sticky glaze of teriyaki chicken wings…

Without further ado, here’s a roundup of our favorite no-utensil recipes (just make sure to keep a stack of napkins nearby!):

Tofu Banh Mi with Pickled Vegetables and Sriracha Mayonnaise

A vegetarian spin on the banh mi, filled with flavorful tofu steaks, quick pickled carrots and sriracha mayo. Best to hold these hearty sandwiches with two hands.

Teriyaki Chicken Wings with Wedge Salad

We couldn’t stop eating these wings and drumettes thanks to an addictive syrupy coating. Iceberg gets cut into wedges just the right size for picking up with your fingers when you need a refreshing side.

Fish Tacos with Cod, Cabbage, and Lime Crema

Crispy battered fish gets topped with a crunchy cabbage and tomato slaw and a creamy lime sauce. Of course, no spoon or fork could support all of that—only the finagling of your fingers around the soft tortilla.

Caprese Sliders with Balsamic Kale

The combination of fresh mozzarella, sweet tomatoes and basil is still a classic favorite, and it’s especially delicious when sandwiched in a pillowy brioche bun. These are small enough to eat in just a few bites, and they’ll fit perfectly in the palm of your hand.

Focaccia Sandwich with Prosciutto and Tomato Tapenade

The soft focaccia is great for soaking up our homemade tomato tapenade. Cheese does that bubbly business we so love under the broiler, and prosciutto always makes a meal feel special. Your fingers might get a little greasy along the way, but for a good cause.

Mozzarella and Spinach Naan Pizza

Our most flavorful vegetarian pizza gets topped with lots of spinach, mozzarella and fresh basil. There’s no tomato sauce, only tomato paste with a little balsamic for sweetness and acidity. This one’s so good you’ll want to slice it into small pieces so you don’t eat it all in one go.

Tofu Mushroom Lettuce Cups with Sushi Rice

You won't miss the meat in these flavor-bombs. Bibb lettuce leaves get filled with sticky rice and an umami-packed spicy mushroom mixture. You might have to pick up delicious morsels with your fingers, but that's part of the fun.
